Are You Ready For The Rain?

Are You Ready For The Rain?
With just experiencing the first major rain storm of the season and with another fast on it’s way, there are a few things that we should all check to ensure that our home’s are safe during the wet winter months here in Southern California.
Rain gutters are clean and clear
Rain gutters work great…When they are not full of debris.  Things like blown, fallen leaves and small branches from trees can end up in your rain gutters. When these items get into your gutter system they take up space and can ultimately cause a blockage and not allow water to flow freely through the gutters.  There are special tools you can buy to clean out your gutter systems.  You can even call a gutter cleaning company to come out and take care of them for you.
Surface drain systems are functional
Surface Drains are great…when they aren’t clogged or broken.  Typical surface drains are well-designed but poorly maintained.  If you don’t maintain your drainage systems, it is only a matter of time before they become clogged, blocked, or broken.  If you don’t clean your drains at least once a year, you can develop a build-up of dirt and vegetation within the system.  Another thing that happens quite frequently is vegetation root systems entering the piping.  Root systems, such as tree and bush root systems, love drain systems.  The reason is that the drainage systems typically have water in or around them.  Root systems are designed to seek out water supplies to survive and drain systems typically have water in or around them.
The best thing to do is always to confirm everything is in working order prior to needing it and realize that those preventative systems that you thought you had in place are not preventing much of anything.  Water is great for drinking, but your home is never thirsty.
