Most people don’t think too much about their warehouse floors. Once in awhile, you may have to sweep or mop them, but other than that, the floors don’t get much of a thought. However, your forklift operators and other employees may have a different tale to tell. If the floors are uneven, cracked, or sinking, their backs may be hurting from the forklift bumping, they may be tripping over uneven slabs, or they may be having trouble moving loads around the sunken concrete.
Causes of Warehouse Floor Problems
There are several causes that may make repairs to the concrete warehouse floor necessary.
- Incorrect Curing
- Soil Erosion
- Insufficient Soil Preparation
- Shrinking and Expanding Soil
Voids can occur under the slab. Heavy equipment, like forklifts or electric pallet jacks, can cause the slabs to tilt and be uneven. This can cause an operator to lose a load or get their equipment stuck when it hits an uneven spot. In some situations, it can lead to injury and damage to equipment and materials.
Solutions for Uneven Warehouse Floors
Protect your employees, equipment, and inventory by making sure the warehouse floors are even and stable. Dalinghaus Construction uses Alchemy-Spectec, or slab leveling, to make sure that concrete slabs are level and strong.
During the Alchemy-Spectec process, a polyurethane foam is injected through small holes under the slabs. This foam expands, filling the voids under the slab and lifting it to the desired height. The installation process allows us to move the slab to within a tenth of an inch of the desired height. The polyurethane foam is waterproof and won’t wash away like other options. The foam also seals the bottom of the slab, closing off any cracks that may exist in the concrete. If needed, a joint fill material is used to help prevent any tripping over gaps between the slabs. It also allows equipment to run smoothly over the joints, lessening the damage to wheels or to the edges of the concrete. These gaps allow the slabs to expand and contract without cracking or moving out of place.
The Alchemy-Spectec process doesn’t need a lot of heavy equipment, so you won’t have to make a lot of room for us to work. The polyurethane foam also cures quickly, you can usually use the slab about 15 minutes after the installation is complete. The process is less expensive and time-consuming than tearing up and replacing a concrete slab and will take care of any underlying problems that were causing the concrete to sink.
