I get calls all the time from customers asking for an estimate for Epoxy Coatings at their home. Most of them have seen a photo or a video of one of our completed concrete coating projects on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc. Some have seen us doing work in their neighborhood, beautifying their neighbor’s oil stained driveway or ugly old garage floor. I know people see the finished product and assume that we are doing Epoxy Coatings. It is right then and there that I have to break their heart and tell them our company does not, and will not install Epoxy Concrete Coatings, HOWEVER…we have a product that is almost identical to Epoxy aesthetically, is waterproof, stain resistant, scratch resistant, UV resistant, won’t peel or fade, is 4x stronger than Epoxy…AND…wait for it…comes with a 15 Year Warranty! That product is (***drum roll please***🥁) Polyurea Concrete Coatings!
Now you might be saying to yourself, “Hey lady, I don’t care what you put on my garage floor, I just want my car to look cool in there!” That’s no problem, we can make you look cool, and make your garage (or pool deck, patio, driveway, walkways, etc.) the envy of everyone on the block! But…if you are interested in learning a little more about some of the similarities and differences between Epoxy Coatings vs the Polyurea Coatings that Dalinghaus Construction offers to our customers, dive in a little deeper with me.
First, let me tell you a little bit about Epoxy Concrete Coatings. Epoxy is a 2 step, thermoset resin (simply put- a resin that cures from a liquid). Epoxy Coatings are usually known for being used in industrial areas (like a warehouse you need to drive a truck or a forklift over and over again). It is a thick resin that cures slowly (typically takes 2-3 days). Environmental factors like moisture, changes in temperature, even sunlight can change the way the Epoxy cures. Those factors just don’t affect the curing time, but can change the look of the coating. Some common issues people report with Epoxy are:
- Peeling Floors
- Moisture Buildup Underneath the Coating
- Inconsistent Color
- Cloudiness when Epoxy Resin Hardens
- Bubbling and Deformities
- Dullness after Curing
So how do Epoxy and Polyurea compete in a side by side comparison? Initially, both products have a lot of similarities. When properly installed, Epoxy looks almost identical to a Polyurea Coating. They both offer multiple finishes (chip, quartz, solid color, metallic, etc…). Like I had mentioned before, they are both known for chemical, abrasion, heat, and UV resistance. Now, an upside to Epoxy is that it can be a more cost effective solution for the short term. I say for the short term because an Epoxy Coating typically has a lifespan of 5-10 years before it needs to be re-applied, whereas our Polyurea Coatings have an average lifespan of over 15 years. In fact, our Polyurea Coatings come with a 15 year warranty, so you can have complete peace of mind knowing the work will last a long time. If you are telling me I have a choice to coat my concrete just 1 time…vs… a possible 3 times over the course of 15 years, I am gonna choose doing it just 1 time…every time!
Now that you know a little more about Epoxy Coatings, let’s go over some of the benefits of our Polyurea Concrete Coatings.
Polyurea is also a 2 step resin, but very different from Epoxy resin. Like I mentioned earlier, Polyurea is 4x stronger than Epoxy. It is also 98% more flexible than Epoxy. It is the flexibility of the material that makes it extremely durable and long lasting. Since the material is flexible, it will not crack or peel. Polyurea can be applied in extremely hot or cold temperatures. The coatings are chemically resistant to salt, gas, oil, and even harsh chemicals. It is much more scratch resistant than Epoxy (great for pet paws 🐶😺). Polyurea Coatings are waterproof, and are a great option for resurfacing slippery walkways or pool decks 🏊♀️. Again, as I mentioned earlier, our coatings are available in an array of colors, textures, and finishes like chip, quartz, solid color, metallic, and my personal favorite, glitter! Also, Polyurea is UV resistant, won’t fade, or turn yellow in the sunlight. Almost all of our Concrete Coating projects are able to be completed in just 1 day, AND you are not going to lose 3 days of your life tip toeing around waiting for Epoxy to cure! You can walk, drive, or do whatever you want on our Polyurea Concrete Coatings within 24 hours! I know personally that I can contain the husband, children, and pets in MY home for 24 hours, but 3 days would be madness! And last but not least, like I had mentioned earlier, Dalinghaus Construction offers a 15 Year Warranty on our Polyurea Concrete Coatings!
I hope I was able to shine some light on the benefits of Polyurea. If not, and If you have more questions, I literally can’t help you. I told you absolutely EVERYTHING I know about Polyurea Concrete Coatings! BUT….I do have a guy or two around here that can help you! One of our Concrete Coating Specialist can meet you at your home for a no cost, no obligation evaluation. They usually take less than 30 minutes, we can leave you with a proposal on the same day, and you can ask him as many questions as your heart desires.
