A beachside home in Rancho Palos Verdes settled 16 inches over a couple of months. The crew excavated each pier location and drove steel piers down to competent, load bearing soil or bedrock, with a lift to follow once every pier was in.

Steel piers under a home that settled 16 inches
Settlement is not unusual in Rancho Palos Verdes. This home stood out even so. Over a couple of months it settled 16 inches.
When we visited on August 22, 2024, Joe and his crew had already excavated each pier location and were driving steel piers in sections until each one reached competent, load bearing soil or bedrock, ground that can carry the weight of the house. Once a pier rests on that ground, the home can be carried on the pier rather than on the soil that has been sinking beneath it.
With every pier installed, the plan was to attempt a lift later that week or the next and recover the settlement. That is where the original write up of the job ended, with the piers in and the lift still to come.
