Standing Water in Crawl Space: diagnosed and explained.

Standing water is the crawl space problem nobody argues with. You open the access door after a storm and there it is: a puddle, a channel, sometimes an inch or two covering the whole floor. Unlike dampness, pooled water announces that drainage has failed outright somewhere, and it starts doing damage immediately. Wood posts standing in water wick moisture upward and rot at the base. Concrete pads sit in softened, saturated soil and begin to settle. Humidity in the enclosed space climbs toward its ceiling, condensing on every cool surface and feeding mold across the framing. Pests find it fast, because a wet, sheltered space is exactly what they are looking for. The water itself arrives by one of a few routes: roof runoff dumped at the foundation by short downspouts, stormwater flowing along ground that slopes toward the house, rain entering through open vents or a failing access door, a plumbing leak with nowhere to drain, or saturated soil pressing water through the stem walls. Pumping the water out treats the afternoon. Finding and closing the route treats the problem, and that is the difference between a crawl space that floods every season and one that stays dry. Getting the water out is the easy half; keeping it out is the project. The lasting fix intercepts water before it reaches the house with grated yard drains and extended downspout discharge, then gives anything that still arrives a controlled exit across dimpled drainage matting to a collection point.
