A deck is only as steady as its footings.

Helical deck piers screw galvanized steel down past the surface clay that heaves and shrinks with the seasons, so your deck stands on ground that has stopped arguing with the weather.

How it works

What to know about helical deck piers, and when it's the right call.

A helical deck pier works like a screw driven into wood: the helix plates convert rotation into downward pull, drawing the shaft through the loose, moisture sensitive surface soil into deeper ground with real bearing capacity. The drive head records torque as it turns, and since torque tracks soil resistance, the crew reads capacity in real time and keeps advancing until the pier meets the target for the loads it will carry. A steel cap or bracket then connects the pier to the deck post or beam. From that point the deck's weight travels straight down the shaft to soil that does not shrink and swell with the seasons, which is exactly what the old shallow footing could not offer. Because the pier bears immediately, there is no waiting on concrete, and because the shaft is galvanized, it resists corrosion below grade for the long haul.

The symptoms that usually lead to helical deck piers are on the foundation repair problem signs page, alongside the other signs that point to the same underlying cause.

Installation Process

How we install helical deck piers.

Step 01

Free evaluation of footings and framing

We measure post plumb and deck elevations, check the existing footings, and separate footing settlement from framing failure, because steel under a bad beam fixes nothing. You get the findings in writing.

Step 02

Pier layout and sizing

Pier locations and helix configuration are matched to the deck's loads, the soil, and the access. Compact drive equipment reaches tight backyard spots.

Step 03

Drive the piers, log the torque

Each galvanized pier is rotated into the ground while the crew logs torque and depth, advancing until the readings prove capacity for the load that pier will carry.

Step 04

Connect and level

Steel caps or brackets tie the piers to posts and beams, and the deck is brought toward level as the load transfers to the piers.

Step 05

Clean up and verify

The site is cleaned and final elevations are checked against the starting measurements, so you can see the correction, not just take our word for it.

Diagnosis First

What does your deck actually need?

Steel under a deck solves footing problems, not framing problems. Match what is actually failing.

Posts leaning, pads cracked or heaved

Footings tilting, stairs separating, deck racking

Shallow pads riding seasonal soil movement are the problem helical deck piers exist for: steel seated below the moisture cycles, proven by torque.

Anchored to solid ground.

Steel piers screw down through the unstable soil under your home and lock into deep, solid ground. Your home's weight then rests on that, not on shifting clay.

Proof, not promises
Every pier is verified by its installation torque, measured and documented as it goes in
The twisting force it takes to drive each pier tells us exactly how much it can hold. We measure it live during installation, and the ground under your home proves the number before we ever set your house on it.
Why it holds
01
Galvanized steel. Shafts and helix plates are galvanized steel, which helps them resist rust underground.
02
Made for the soil. Depth is never guessed. The pier keeps going until the ground proves it can carry your home, in expansive clay, loose fill, or desert soil alike.
03
Low impact. Compact equipment, minimal digging, no concrete cure time. Piers carry load the day they go in.
04
Data you keep. Installation torque is documented for each pier, and the readings are provided to you.
Pier size, depth, and count are specified by the evaluation. Diagram schematic, not to scale.

Because a bigger pad in the same moving soil is still a pad in moving soil. Shallow footings sit in the zone where clay shrinks and swells with the seasons, which is what tilted the originals. Helical piers pass through that zone entirely and bear on deeper, stable ground, and each one proves its capacity by torque before it carries anything.
