What to know about concrete grinding, and when it's the right call.
A walk behind or handheld grinder fitted with a diamond segmented wheel removes material from the high side of a joint, feathering it back over a short run so the transition is a ramp rather than a new edge. The work runs wet or with vacuum dust extraction, because dry cutting concrete produces respirable silica and controlling it is not optional. How much can come off is decided by the slab, not by the offset: the cover over any reinforcement and the remaining thickness set a hard limit, and an offset larger than that limit is a lifting job whether or not anybody wanted it to be. The finished surface is rougher than the surrounding concrete and slightly lighter in color, which fades with weathering but never disappears entirely, and on a decorative, stamped or colored surface it is a visible repair. Those are the trade offs, and we state them before the wheel comes out rather than afterwards. Nothing about grinding is structural. It leaves the slab thinner where it was cut, it does not restore drainage across the joint, and it does not touch what is underneath.

Measure before cutting
Elevations are taken on both sides of the joint and the slab is sounded. An offset over a hollow zone is not a grinding candidate, whatever its size.
Confirm the slab has stopped moving
Grinding is only honest on stable concrete, so where movement is in question the recommendation is a survey now and a second one next season rather than a cut today. A walkway panel still settling is not a candidate.
Check the thickness and the cover
The remaining slab depth and the cover over any reinforcement decide how much can come off, which sometimes rules grinding out on its own and sends the joint to a foam lift instead.
Grind and feather with dust control
The high side is taken down and feathered back so the result is a ramp rather than a fresh edge, with wet cutting or vacuum extraction throughout.
Verify and seal the joint
The transition is checked underfoot and the joint is sealed, because an open joint keeps feeding the soil that made the offset. Where a whole run needs the same treatment, sidewalk leveling covers it panel by panel.
