How it works

What to know about retaining wall anchoring systems, and when it's the right call.

A retaining wall fails when the lateral pressure of the retained soil exceeds what the wall can resist, and water is usually the multiplier: saturated backfill weighs more, pushes harder, and lubricates movement. Anchoring changes the contest by giving the wall a grip on ground outside the failure zone. For helical tiebacks, the crew drills through the wall face and rotates a galvanized anchor, steel coated in zinc to resist rust, at a downward angle through the active soil into deep, stable material, logging torque as it advances because torque correlates with holding capacity. For plate and deadman systems, anchors are buried in undisturbed soil behind the slope and connected to the wall with steel rods. Either way, plates on the wall face distribute the load, and tensioning the system puts the wall in equilibrium: the soil pushes, the anchors pull, and the anchors are gripping ground that does not move. Staged retensioning over following seasons, especially dry ones when the clay relaxes, often recovers some of the lean.

The symptoms that usually lead to retaining wall anchoring systems are on the retaining wall repair problem signs page, alongside the other signs that point to the same underlying cause.

Installation Process

How we install retaining wall anchoring systems.

Step 01

Free evaluation with lean measurements

We measure the wall's lean and bow, assess its structural condition, and check the drainage loading it. Walls too far gone for anchoring are told so directly, with retaining wall repair options instead of false hope.

Step 02

Anchor system design

Anchor type, locations, angles, and target capacities are planned from the wall's condition, the slope geometry, and where stable ground actually sits.

Step 03

Install the anchors

Helical tiebacks are screwed through the wall into deep stable soil with torque logged on each one, or plate and deadman anchors are set in undisturbed ground and rodded to the face.

Step 04

Plate and tension

Wall plates are mounted and the system is tensioned to stop the movement, loading the wall evenly rather than stressing any one section.

Step 05

Address the water and verify

Drainage contributions are corrected where found, baseline measurements are recorded, and a retensioning schedule is set where straightening over time is the goal.

Diagnosis First

Can your retaining wall be anchored?

Anchoring saves walls that are failing but not failed. The wall's condition and the ground behind it decide.

Early lean, wall material sound

Measurable tilt, units intact, footing holding

The best case for anchoring: the wall can hold a plate, stable ground is within reach behind the slope, and staged tensioning over following seasons can recover part of the lean.

Wall anchors · How it works

The wall gets pulled back.

A steel rod runs from a plate on the wall out to a helical anchor set deep in stable soil. Tension the rod and the soil itself holds the wall, and can straighten it over time.

What happens at your home
01
Locate the anchors. Placement clears utilities and reaches soil that does not move.
02
Drive the anchor. Helical anchors torque in; the reading verifies grip on every one.
03
Connect and plate. The rod ties the anchor to a steel plate that spreads the hold across the wall.
04
Tension and monitor. The wall is locked today and can be tightened toward straight over seasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Retaining Wall Anchoring Systems.

Don't see your question here? Our team is happy to help. Reach out anytime.

It depends on what the wall has left. A wall that is leaning but structurally intact, block unbroken, footing unsheared, can usually be anchored and often partially straightened. A wall that has crushed, sheared, or rotated past safe limits needs rebuilding, and anchoring it would waste your money. The measurements from the free evaluation put your wall on one side of that line, and we tell you which.
