An expansion joint absorbs concrete movement on purpose, so the movement does not become cracks. Concrete expands when it heats and absorbs moisture, and contracts when it cools and dries. A slab pushing against a neighbor with no relief builds stress until something gives, usually as a crack or a spalled edge. The joint interrupts that standoff with a compressible seam: flexible filler compresses as the slabs grow toward each other and rebounds as they shrink apart, absorbing movement that would otherwise become damage. The sealant across the top does double duty, flexing with the joint while keeping water out of the gap. That waterproofing role matters as much as the movement role in our region, because water passing through a failed joint saturates the soil beneath the slab edge, and saturated clay is exactly the mechanism behind settlement and heave. Replacement means removing the failed filler, cleaning the joint faces, installing new flexible material sized to the gap, and sealing the surface so the joint flexes without leaking.
