What to know about soil nailing, and when it's the right call.
A soil nail starts as a bar, typically single threaded, drilled into the hillside. Grout is then installed around it to encase the bar and lock the nail in. When the grout hardens, it creates additional skin friction, the grip between the grout and the surrounding soil, which helps hold the nail where it is. The nails are tied into a rebar cage or mat, and a concrete wall or a shotcrete wall (concrete sprayed into place) is built to tie them together into one system. The closest comparison is the similar helical tieback system, since both reach into the ground behind the face; the difference is that a soil nail is drilled and grouted.
