What to know about wall anchors, and when it's the right call.
The physics is a tug of war with the ground on both ends. Swollen, saturated clay pushes the wall inward from one side. The anchor system answers by gripping soil far enough from the wall to be outside that pressure bulb, soil that is stable and staying put. The crew augers down, drilling with a screw type bit, to place each earth anchor in that undisturbed ground, drives a steel rod from the wall out to it through a small drilled opening, and mounts a steel plate against the inside face of the wall. Tensioning the rod clamps the wall between the interior plate and the buried anchor, and the wall stops moving because any further bowing would have to drag the anchor through stable earth. Over the following seasons, the rods can be retightened in small steps, taking advantage of dry periods when the clay relaxes to coax the wall back toward plumb.

We measure how far the wall has moved, assess the soil and drainage feeding the pressure, and confirm the yard offers room to set anchors in stable ground. Walls or sites that do not fit get pointed to I-beam bracing or carbon fiber instead.

Anchor locations and spacing are planned from the deflection map so the wall is held evenly along its stressed length.
Set the earth anchors
Small excavations or augered holes place each anchor in undisturbed soil beyond the pressure zone, with minimal disturbance to the yard.
Connect and tension
Steel rods are run from the wall to the anchors, interior wall plates are mounted, and each rod is tensioned to stop the movement without overstressing the wall.
Verify and schedule adjustment
Baseline measurements are recorded, and where straightening is the goal, a retightening schedule is set so the wall can be drawn back gradually and safely.

Often, yes, gradually. The rods are tensioned in stages, and dry seasons, when the clay outside relaxes, are the opportunity to gain ground. How much recovery is possible depends on the wall's construction and how far it moved. Stopping the movement is the objective; straightening is pursued as far as the wall safely allows.
