Cabinets that pull away from the wall or drift out of alignment are following a floor or wall that has moved. Cabinets are rigid boxes screwed to the wall and resting on the floor, which makes them unintentional measuring instruments. When the floor under a cabinet run tilts or the wall behind it moves, the boxes cannot flex to follow, so the evidence appears at their edges: a gap opening between the upper cabinets and the wall or ceiling, a countertop pulling away from the backsplash, doors that used to align now sitting at different heights, drawers that roll open on their own, or a visible seam where two cabinet boxes have separated from each other. The mechanism is nearly always beneath your feet. When a foundation settles unevenly, the kitchen floor tips a few fractions of an inch, the base cabinets tip with it, and the countertop and uppers register the difference against the wall. Because kitchens and bathrooms carry plumbing, they are also common neighborhoods for the leaks that soften or erode soil in the first place. In Southern California, Arizona, and Nevada, expansive clay swelling in the wet season and shrinking in the dry season keeps foundations moving in exactly this slow, uneven way. A small stable gap behind a cabinet may be old news from the year the house settled in. A gap that grows, doors drifting further out of alignment, or a countertop separating alongside floor slope and sticking doors means the movement is current.
